I remember once I thought I gave the most amazing massage to a client.

Did you learn something new recently, but you’re concerned about doing it perfectly on a paying client?

When I went to school in 2000-2001, the training was excellent, but there was a lot that I missed and didn’t understand until much later.

The beautiful thing about massage CE classes that I love is the ability to learn anything I want. 

Unlike real estate agents and other professionals who have to take the same boring classes every few years with a few miscellaneous updates, we have this huge variety of education to pull from for our edification. We are so lucky! 

Some long term therapists complain there is nothing more for them to learn and they should be given a pass on CEs after so much time as an MT. I don’t believe there is an end to how much you can learn, but I do believe there is an end to how much you WANT to learn and grow. And that is okay if that is what you choose. 

Since many of us don’t have a choice at this point on how many CEs are required in the state we live in, we might as well dive in and get the most out of each class. 

Here are a few things I’ve learned over the years about making the most of the CE requirement. 

1. Do your best to save up and travel for your CE. This is a way to see parts of the world you may not ever see and write it off on your taxes. (Can we say Bali, Mexico, Eselen in California, Santa Fe New Mexico, etc.) 

2. If you're in a crunch get CEs locally. It will save you money on travel expenses and you may meet other MTs with whom you can build a strong support system in your area. 

3. Do ethics online if you need those last minute CEs. There are often free ones that won’t cost you a dime through your insurance company like AMTA. 

4. Take classes in things you know nothing about! You may find a new passion or have the realization this is not the path you want to follow. 

5. Take lots of different classes until you do find the path you want to follow, then by all means, follow it and get certified and specialize in that niche market. It can make you stand out in your community and get you great referrals, even from other MTs. 

6. Plan ahead for CEs if they are required in your state. There’s nothing worse than coming up on your deadline and having to hunt for last minute classes that you may have zero interest in. 

7. Take CEs that will build your craft. If you want to be a problem solver, take classes that will teach you those things. If you want to stick to light touch because you’ve been injured, find classes that focus on that type of touch.
